  • Marlins' Johnny Cueto: Takes third loss

Cueto (0-3) took the loss Thursday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over six innings against Philadelphia. He struck out four.

Cueto got himself into trouble in the top of the second after walking Nick Castellanos to start the inning. The right-handed veteran then served up a hanging cutter to J.T. Realmuto two batters later, leading to a two-run shot to put the Marlins down 2-0. Cueto would actually go on to shut out the Phillies over the next four innings before surrendering back-to-back singles and a walk to open the seventh, which led to two more runs coming home. He's now allowed four runs in each of his last two starts, though he's also made it through six innings in three straight.

  • Marlins' Devin Smeltzer: Selected to MLB bullpen

Miami selected Smeltzer's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.

Smeltzer has struggled in both the majors and minors this season, but the Marlins need a fresh arm heading into their series finale Thursday versus the Phillies. The 27-year-old left-hander figures to operate in long relief.

  • Marlins' Huascar Brazoban: Optioned to Triple-A

Miami optioned Brazoban to Triple-A Jacksonville on Thursday.

Brazoban was charged with two earned runs while failing to record an out in his most recent appearance Wednesday versus the Phillies. Devin Smeltzer will take his spot in the Marlins' bullpen ahead of Thursday's series finale.

  • Marlins' Nick Fortes: Takes seat Thursday

Fortes is out of the lineup Thursday versus the Phillies.

Fortes has claimed a larger share of the catching duties in Miami over the last several weeks, but he'll grab a seat Thursday as Jacob Stallings takes a turn behind the dish. Both backstops have struggled offensively this year.

  • Marlins' Avisail Garcia: On bench Thursday

Garcia is not in the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies.

Bryan De La Cruz, Jazz Chisholm and Jesus Sanchez will start across the outfield as the Marlins take on new Phillies right-hander Michael Lorenzen. Garcia has slashed just .191/.261/.349 in 71 plate appearances versus righties this season.

  • Marlins' Jesus Sanchez: Walks it off Wednesday

Sanchez went 3-for-5 with a walk, a double and two RBI in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies.

The Marlins had plenty of heroes on a wild night that saw them wait until the sixth inning to score their first runs and take their first and only lead in the 12th, but Sanchez got the walk-off honors by bringing home Jazz Chisholm with a single. Sanchez hadn't had a multi-hit performance since July 14, but since the All-Star break he's compiled a solid .295/.367/.432 slash line, albeit with just one homer, three runs and five RBI in 14 contests. With Chisholm and Avisail Garcia both healthy again, Miami's outfield has gotten crowded, so Sanchez will need to keep hitting if he wants to maintain even a semi-regular spot in the lineup.

  • Marlins' Jorge Soler: Belts 26th homer

Soler went 1-for-6 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies.

With the Marlins down by a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Soler crushed a 98.8-mph sinker from Gregory Soto to right-center field to tie the game at 5-5, setting the stage for a wild finish. The 31-year-old slugger was ice cold coming out of the All-Star break, batting .136 (6-for-44) in 11 games with a 36.7 percent strikeout rate, but he's now hit safely in five straight and gone yard in two of the last three contests while fanning only four times. On the season, Soler's up to 26 homers and 57 RBI through 104 games with an .825 OPS, which would be his highest mark since 2019 when he launched 48 homers for the Royals.

  • Marlins' Jazz Chisholm: Swats homer No. 10

Chisholm went 1-for-6 with a solo home run and two additional runs scored in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies.

The Marlins didn't even get on the board until the sixth inning, but once Josh Bell and Chisholm launched back-to-back homers off Zack Wheeler, the team's offense kicked into high gear. The 25-year-old then came home twice more in extra innings, and he scored the winning run in the 12th as the phantom runner on a Jesus Sanchez single. Chisholm actually has a 10-game hitting streak going that dates back to May 12 due to two lengthy injury absences, and his 10 homers and 15 steals in 47 contests on the season highlights his fantasy upside down the stretch if he can stay off the IL.

  • Marlins' Josh Bell: Huge Miami debut

Bell went 4-for-5 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and two RBI in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies.

The Marlins were shut out by Zack Wheeler through five innings, but Bell got them on the board with a solo shot in the sixth as he made an immediate impact for his new club. The 30-year-old's xBA (.275) and xSLG (.460) this season have been pacing well ahead of his actual production and are more in line with his career numbers, and if his bad luck in Cleveland didn't follow him to south Florida, Bell could prove to be a huge addition for Miami down the stretch as it chases a playoff spot.

  • Marlins' Braxton Garrett: Fans five in no-decision

Garrett came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 9-8 extra-innings win over the Phillies, giving up three runs on six hits and two walks over five-plus innings. He struck out five.

He was briefly on the hook for the loss, getting lifted after he walked Bryson Stott to lead off the sixth inning and watching him come around to score a go-ahead run for the Phillies, but the two bullpens made sure neither starter was involved in the decision. Garrett has completed six innings just once in his last seven seven starts, posting a 5.24 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 32:5 K:BB through 34.1 innings over that stretch, and fatigue could be catching up to the 25-year-old southpaw in his first full season in a big-league rotation. He'll try to get on track in his next outing, likely to come early next week in Cincinnati.

  • Marlins' Garrett Hampson: Optioned back to Triple-A

Miami optioned Hampson to Triple-A Jacksonville on Wednesday.

Hampson was just called up Tuesday, but the Marlins need to free up space for all of their trade deadline acquisitions. The 28-year-old super-utilityman has batted .275/.346/.384 with one homer and three steals in 68 games this season at the major-league level.

  • Marlins' Bryan De La Cruz: Gets Wednesday off

De La Cruz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

De La Cruz will get a well-deserved day off after he started in each of the previous 23 games and hit .239 with five home runs over that stretch. The 26-year-old will face more competition for playing time in the outfield with Jazz Chisholm and Avisail Garcia recently returning from the injured list, though De La Cruz's solid body of work this season should keep his role fairly secure.

  • Marlins' Jon Berti: Goes to bench Wednesday

Berti is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

Berti will head to the bench for the first time since July 21, ending a streak of nine consecutive starts in which he saw action at third base, shortstop and in left field. The Marlins moved on from Jean Segura ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline but acquired two player (Josh Bell and Jake Burger) who are expected to start on a regular basis, so Berti could end up finding himself on the bench more frequently. Berti's ability to play all over the infield and outfield should at least keep him in the mix for a handful of starts per week as other players get days off or miss time due to injury.

  • Marlins' Jacob Stallings: Takes seat Wednesday

Stallings is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies.

The Marlins' catcher timeshare has lately tilted in favor of Nick Fortes, who will pick up his fourth start in six games Wednesday. Stallings has posted a lowly .550 OPS since the All-Star break, which is right in line with his season-long mark (.560).

  • Marlins' David Robertson: Takes first blown save with Miami

Robertson (4-3) blew the save and took the loss Tuesday against the Phillies. He allowed three runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one in an inning of work.

It was a brutal night for Robertson in his second appearance with Miami. Bryce Harper tied the game 1-1 with an RBI double before Robertson surrendered a two-run homer to Nick Castellanos that would prove to be the game-winning hit. The Marlins will hope this was an anomaly in what's been an otherwise excellent year for the 38-year-old Robertson. Overall, Robertson's ERA sits at 2.54 with a 1.02 WHIP and 50:14 K:BB across 46 innings this season, and he's gone 15-for-19 in save opportunities.
