  • White Sox's Eloy Jimenez: Day off Thursday

Jimenez is not in the lineup Thursday at Texas.

Gavin Sheets will fill the DH role for the White Sox and bat seventh versus the Rangers and Max Scherzer. This looks to be a routine day off for Jimenez, who went 1-for-7 with a single and two strikeouts in the first two games of the three-game series.

  • White Sox's Luis Robert: Gets breather Thursday

Robert is not in the lineup for Thursday's series finale against the Rangers.

Trayce Thompson (oblique) has been activated from the 60-day injured list and will get the start in center field as Robert takes a routine day of rest. Eloy Jimenez is also on the bench for the White Sox on Thursday afternoon in Texas.

  • White Sox's Trayce Thompson: Activated from 60-day IL

The White Sox activated Thompson (oblique) from the 60-day injured list Thursday.

Recovered from the severe oblique strain that sent him to the IL in early June, Thompson will start in center field and bat sixth for the White Sox on Thursday afternoon against the Rangers. He was acquired from the Dodgers last Friday as part of the Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly trade.

  • White Sox's Dylan Cease: Can't get out of second frame

Cease (4-5) took the loss against Texas on Wednesday, allowing seven runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out one batter over 1.2 innings.

By almost every measure, this was Cease's worst outing of the season. He logged his shortest start to date -- previously, he had completed at least four innings in each of his 22 appearances -- and tied a season-worst mark with the seven runs he allowed. Cease also recorded his lowest strikeout total of the season with the single punchout he was able to muster. The right-hander served up a two-run homer to Corey Seager in the first inning, but his demise was the second, when he allowed five runs on three singles, a double and three walks. The poor outing pushed Cease's season ERA to 4.61, which would be his worst mark since his rookie 2019 campaign.

  • White Sox's Liam Hendriks: Undergoes Tommy John surgery

Hendriks (elbow) underwent Tommy John surgery Wednesday, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports.

At last check, Hendriks was taking encouraging steps forward in his recovery from a bout of right elbow inflammation, but something must have gone wrong in a recent throwing session. The veteran reliever made a triumphant return earlier this season after he recovered non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but he wound up appearing in only five games for the White Sox and will now be sidelined until at least late 2024.

  • White Sox's Seby Zavala: Picking up more work

Zavala will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Rangers.

Zavala will be making his sixth start behind the plate in seven games, though Yasmani Grandal was simultaneously included in the lineup at first base for one of those contests. For the third game in a row, however, Grandal finds himself on the bench, so unless he's dealing with an unreported illness or injury, he appears to have ceded the No. 1 catcher's role to Zavala. Given that Zavala is getting on base at a .133 clip in 10 games since the All-Star break, he's not yet doing anything to run away with the job.

  • White Sox's Yasmani Grandal: On bench again Wednesday

Grandal is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Rangers.

Grandal hasn't drawn a start since Saturday, though he came off the bench Tuesday and there's no word of any new physical issue. Seby Zavala will catch again and bat ninth Wednesday versus Texas.

  • White Sox's Jimmy Lambert: Recalled from Charlotte

Lambert was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte on Wednesday.

The 28-year-old right-hander will fill the bullpen spot left vacant by Tuesday's trade of Keynan Middleton to the Yankees. Lambert was a key contributor out of the White Sox bullpen in 2022, but he has struggled to a 6.29 ERA and 1.77 WHIP through 24.1 major-league innings this season.

  • White Sox's Elvis Andrus: Could be top option at second base

Andrus went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts Tuesday against the Rangers.

Andrus drew the first start at second base for the White Sox after the team dealt away Jake Burger at the trade deadline. He had previously slipped into a backup role for the team, but Andrus could see an uptick in playing time while also competing with Zach Remillard for reps at the position. Andrus has only seven hits across his last 31 at-bats and 13 games.

  • White Sox's Tim Anderson: Nabs 11th steal

Anderson went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 2-0 loss to Texas.

Anderson is finally showing signs of life after a sluggish first half. The 30-year-old shortstop is slashing .338/.394/.415 in 16 games since the All-Star break, with eight multi-hit efforts and two steals during that stretch.

  • White Sox's Jesse Scholtens: Takes tough loss

Scholtens (1-4) took the loss Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over six innings against the Rangers. He struck out six.

Scholtens carved up the potent Rangers offense Tuesday, needing just 80 pitches to complete six innings, but the White Sox didn't provide him with any run support and he left the game trailing 1-0. The 29-year-old rookie's only blemish came on a solo shot by Mitch Garver in the fifth inning. The majority of Scholtens' appearances have come as a reliever this year, but this strong outing may earn him some more starts down the stretch.

  • White Sox's Juan Carela: Dealt to White Sox

The White Sox acquired Carela from the Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for right-hander Keynan Middleton.

A 21-year-old righty, Carela logged a 3.67 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 109 strikeouts in 83.1 innings at High-A Hudson Valley this season. He's a decent enough pitching prospect and will work on continuing to improve his command and control in the coming years to make it as a starter long term.

  • White Sox's Luis Patino: Dealt to Chicago

Patino was traded from the Rays to the White Sox on Tuesday in exchange for cash, James Fegan of the Chicago Sun Times reports.

Patino was once a highly-prized pitching prospect, but he didn't emerge as an effective starter or reliever at the highest level. The 23-year-old righty has a career 5.23 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 111 strikeouts in 118.2 MLB innings. Patino has a 6.75 ERA this season at Triple-A while working mostly as a reliever, but since few teams have more rotation spots up for grabs in the short term and long term than the White Sox, he could continue his development as a starter in his new organization. The fact that the Rays were willing to give up Patino for cash doesn't inspire much confidence in his outlook moving forward, however. He'll report to Triple-A Charlotte to begin his tenure in the White Sox organization, per Scott Merkin of MLB.com.

  • White Sox's Jake Eder: Traded to Chicago for Burger

Eder was traded from the Marlins to the White Sox on Tuesday in exchange for Jake Burger, Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reports.

Eder is coming off his best start of the year for Double-A Pensacola, in which he struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run in 5.2 innings. He underwent Tommy John surgery in September 2021 and has a 3.94 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 29.2 innings across six starts at Double-A, although his fastball velocity has been more in the low-90s, rather than his pre-surgery mid-90s fastball. Eder's best pitch is a plus slider, and improving his changeup and command will be of focus over the coming seasons. He could reach the majors sooner with the White Sox than he would have in Miami, given the depth of both organizations.
