Top Diamondbacks News

  • Diamondbacks' Corbin Carroll: Moved to leadoff

Carroll batted leadoff and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base in Thursday's 1-0 loss to San Francisco.

Carroll batted leadoff for the first time this season, as Ketel Marte was held out of the starting lineup. It was a tweak to an offense that has struggled to score of late -- just 15 runs over the last seven games. Carroll did his part by getting on base twice and reaching scoring position following his stolen base, but the Diamondbacks extended their scoreless streak to 17 innings. The steal was Carroll's fifth in the last eight games and 34th of the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Pham: Hitless in debut

Pham went 0-for-3 with a walk in Thursday's 1-0 loss to the Giants.

Pham made his Arizona debut after being acquired from the Mets minutes before the trade deadline. He reported to the new team Thursday and was immediately placed in the lineup at DH and batted third. His addition adds another body to DH/OF mix that includes Corbin Carroll, Lourdes Gurriel, Jake McCarthy and Alek Thomas.

  • Diamondbacks' Brandon Pfaadt: Takes tough loss against Giants

Pfaadt (0-5) took the loss Thursday, allowing one run on two hits and one walk over seven innings in a 1-0 loss against the Giants. He struck out seven.

Pfaadt turned in the best start of his young career, generating an absurd 31 called plus swinging strikes on just 84 pitches. The 24-year-old rookie's only blemish came on a LaMonte Wade, Jr. solo shot in the fourth inning; however, he didn't receive any run support and was saddled with the loss. In three outings since being recalled from the minors, Pfaadt has posted a 3.42 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 16:2 K:BB across 18.2 innings. He is currently projected for a tougher matchup against the Dodgers next week.

  • Diamondbacks' Jake McCarthy: Not in lineup Thursday

McCarthy is not in the lineup Thursday against the Giants.

Lourdes Gurriel, Alek Thomas and Corbin Carroll will start across the outfield as the Diamondbacks take on the Giants and left-handed opener Scott Alexander. The left-handed-hitting McCarthy should be available off the bench.

  • Diamondbacks' Ketel Marte: Gets breather Thursday

Marte is absent from the lineup Thursday versus the Giants.

Marte went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in the Diamondbacks' loss at San Francisco on Wednesday and will grab some physical and mental rest during Thursday's matinee. Geraldo Perdomo is getting the start at second base for Arizona, and Nick Ahmed will play shortstop.

  • Diamondbacks' Tommy Pham: Batting third in D-backs debut

Pham is serving as the DH and batting third in his Diamondbacks debut Thursday versus the Giants.

He was acquired from the Mets just before Tuesday's trade deadline in exchange for infield prospect Jeremy Rodriguez and will jump right into a prominent lineup spot with the Diamondbacks. Pham had registered a strong .820 OPS with 10 homers and 11 steals through 79 games this season with New York.

  • Diamondbacks' Kyle Lewis: Optioned to Reno

Arizona optioned Lewis to Triple-A Reno on Thursday.

This move frees up a 26-man roster spot for Tommy Pham, who was acquired from the Mets ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline and will officially report to the Diamondbacks ahead of Thursday's series finale in San Francisco. Lewis has batted just .182/.229/.303 in 35 plate appearances this season at the major-league level.

  • Diamondbacks' Jace Peterson: Makes second straight start

Peterson started at third base and went 1-for-3 with an RBI in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to San Francisco.

The lefty-hitting Peterson made his second consecutive start at the hot corner, both coming against right-handers, and is 2-for-6 since joining the Diamondbacks at the trade deadline. He and the right-handed hitting Emmanuel Rivera are splitting third base. Whether third base becomes a traditional lefty-righty platoon has not been determined, and the job share will become crowded when Evan Longoria (back) returns from the injured list.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Doubles, scores in loss

Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to San Francisco.

Gurriel doubled in the first inning and scored Arizona's second run on a single, as the Diamondbacks raced to an early 2-0 lead. He was the last D-back to reach second base, as the bats went silent from then on out. Gurriel's stick, however, has been relatively active compared to the rest of the lineup during a three-game sweep by the Giants. He has hits in four consecutive games, going 6-for-15 with two doubles, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored. The outburst follows a 10-game stretch during which Gurriel went 2-for-39 (.051).

  • Diamondbacks' Geraldo Perdomo: Nabs steal Wednesday

Perdomo went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 4-2 loss to the Giants.

Perdomo did his part in the first inning, but that was the extent of his hitting contributions for the game. The shortstop is hitting .286 (16-for-56) since the All-Star break, though just four of those hits have gone for extra bases. He's at a solid .274/.380/.406 slash line with 13 steals, five home runs, 37 RBI and 48 runs scored over 91 contests this season. Perdomo continues to bat leadoff against right-handers while often sitting out versus southpaws in favor of Nick Ahmed.

  • Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Fades in fifth inning

Cecconi allowed two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Wednesday.

Cecconi was cruising until the fifth inning, when he gave up three baserunners and both of the runs on his line. His strikeout stuff didn't materialize in his major-league debut, but he had a 104:29 K:BB over 103 innings with Triple-A Reno prior to his call-up. He'll need a bit more leeway from manager Torey Lovullo to be in a spot to earn wins -- the rookie threw just 59 pitches (36 strikes) in this outing. The Diamondbacks have two off days next week, so Cecconi may have to settle for a bulk-relief outing if he remains in the majors.

  • Diamondbacks' Austin Adams: Diagnosed with ankle fracture

Arizona placed Adams on the 60-day injured list Wednesday with a fractured right ankle.

Adams suffered the injury in Tuesday's game against the Giants and can be ruled out for the remainder of the 2023 regular season. Slade Cecconi will fill his spot on the 40-man roster as he prepares to make his MLB debut in a start Wednesday night at San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Selected for MLB debut

Arizona selected Cecconi's contract from Triple-A Reno ahead of his scheduled start Wednesday against the Giants.

Cecconi has struggled to a 6.38 ERA in 103 innings (20 starts) this season in the Pacific Coast League, but the Diamondbacks need a fill-in for Tommy Henry, who landed on the injured list this past Sunday due to left elbow inflammation. Cecconi does have good control, so maybe he'll be able to work deep and rack up some strikeouts in what will be his major-league debut at Oracle Park in San Francisco.

  • Diamondbacks' Slade Cecconi: Starting Wednesday

Cecconi is listed as Arizona's probable starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against San Francisco.

The Diamondbacks will formally call Cecconi up from Triple-A Reno later Wednesday for what will be his MLB debut. The 24-year-old right-hander has toiled in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League this season, posting a 6.38 ERA and 1.38 WHIP over 20 starts (103 innings). Cecconi is joining the rotation as a replacement for the injured Tommy Henry (elbow), who may spend more than the minimum 15 days on the shelf.

  • Diamondbacks' Austin Adams: Pulled with ankle injury

Adams was removed from Tuesday's game with a right ankle injury, MLB.com reports.

Adams entered to pitch the eighth inning but was removed two pitches into the outing after Joc Pederson smashed a comebacker off his right ankle. The right-hander was helped off the field and was still being evaluated following the game.
