  • Nationals' Jeter Downs: Recalled from Rochester

Washington recalled Downs from Triple-A Rochester on Thursday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Downs is expected to get regular playing time on the Nationals' infield following Wednesday's demotion of Luis Garcia, but the 25-year-old former top prospect doesn't offer much immediate fantasy appeal given how poorly he's performed this summer in the minors. In his 45 games (166 plate appearances) between the rookie-level Florida Complex League, High-A Wilmington and Triple-A Rochester this season, Downs was slashing just .165/.319/.308 with three home runs and eight stolen bases.

  • Nationals' MacKenzie Gore: Pitches well in no-decision

Gore did not factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings against the Brewers. He struck out five.

Gore left a four-seamer over the middle of the plate in the top of the second, which Tyrone Taylor launched into the stands to give the Brewers their first run of the game. However, the lefty settled in after that mistake, going 1-2-3 over the next two frames before allowing just one more run on a Christian Yelich double in the sixth. It marked Gore's first quality start since June 3, and he's now allowed three or fewer runs in three consecutive outings. On the downside, he's also issued at least two walks in four straight and in eight of his last nine.

  • Nationals' Jeter Downs: Promotion incoming

Downs is expected to be called up from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Friday's series opener against the Reds, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports.

The 25-year-old hasn't exactly put his best foot forward for Rochester this season with a .175/.301/.333 slash line in 36 games, but that won't prevent him from getting a look in the majors. Downs was up with the big club for a few weeks early in the season and saw action in just one contest, but he'll likely see the field more this time around after the Nationals demoted Luis Garcia, who has operated as the primary second baseman all season.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: Demoted to Triple-A

The Nationals optioned Garcia to Triple-A Rochester following Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Brewers, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Garcia, who was on the bench Wednesday but entered the contest late as a pinch hitter, will head back to the minors after going 12-for-61 (.197 average) while drawing just two walks in 18 games since the All-Star break. The Nationals haven't announced an immediate replacement for Garcia, but among players currently on the 26-man active roster, Ildemaro Vargas or Michael Chavis could be first in line to fill in for him at the keystone.

  • Nationals' Matt Cronin: Gets season-ending back surgery

Cronin announced Wednesday via his personal Instagram account that he underwent season-ending surgery to address a herniated disc.

Cronin hadn't pitched for Triple-A Rochester since mid-May due to what was a previously undisclosed injury, but the 25-year-old left-hander took to social media to shed more light on his situation. In his post, Cronin noted that he had been dealing with left shoulder and arm pain for two years, but it wasn't until he had his spine examined last month that doctors were able to determine the source of his discomfort. Cronin, who occupies a spot on the Nationals' 40-man roster, is without a clear timeline to resume full baseball activities and may face an uphill battle to gain clearance for the start of spring training.

  • Nationals' Hobie Harris: Sent back to minors

The Nationals optioned Harris to Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

He'll turn over his spot on the 26-man active roster and in the Washington bullpen to left-hander Robert Garcia, whom the Nationals claimed off waivers from the Marlins on Tuesday. Harris was called up from Rochester on Monday and tossed a scoreless inning in relief during his two-day stay with the big club.

  • Nationals' Robert Garcia: Reporting to big club

The Nationals activated Garcia ahead of Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Garcia, whom the Nationals claimed off waivers from the Marlins on Tuesday, had been pitching at Triple-A Jacksonville, but Washington will immediately take a look at him at the big-league level. He previously made his MLB debut with Miami earlier in the season but has otherwise made 31 of his 32 appearances at Jacksonville, where he's accrued a 2.85 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 62:22 K:BB across 41 innings.

  • Nationals' Corey Dickerson: Heads to bench against lefty

Dickerson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

As usual, the lefty-hitting Dickerson will duck out of the starting nine while the Nationals oppose a left-handed pitcher (Wade Miley). Stone Garrett will replace Dickerson in left field and will bat cleanup.

  • Nationals' Luis Garcia: On bench against lefty

Garcia is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

The Nationals are facing a lefty (Wade Miley) and playing a day game after a night game, so manager Dave Martinez likely viewed it as an opportune time to give the lefty-hitting Garcia a day off following a stretch of seven consecutive starts. Michael Chavis will replace Garcia at second base and bat ninth.

  • Nationals' Keibert Ruiz: Idle Wednesday

Ruiz is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Ruiz will get some maintenance as the Nationals close out their series with Milwaukee with a day game after a night game. Riley Adams will draw the start at catcher while Ruiz rests following three consecutive starts.

  • Nationals' Jake Alu: Productive in Tuesday's start

Alu went 1-for-3 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Tuesday's loss to the Brewers.

Getting the start at third base and batting eighth, Alu scored his first career run and picked up his first career RBI in his sixth big-league game. With Jeimer Candelario now a Cub, the door is open for Alu to get a long look at the hot corner, but if the 26-year-old isn't consistently productive, the Nats could turn to another option such as Carter Kieboom (oblique) or even top prospect Brady House, who has a .302/.364/.496 slash line across three levels of the minors this season.

  • Nationals' Josiah Gray: Lasts 3.2 frames in loss

Gray (7-9) took the loss Tuesday versus Milwaukee after he gave up five runs on four hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.

The right-hander limited the Brewers to a single run through three frames but was unable to get through the fourth after he allowed four runs on two hits, three walks and a stolen base. The brief outing is Gray's shortest of the campaign and ended a string of 10 straight starts of at least five innings. It'ss also the third consecutive start and the 12th time this season he's issued at least three free passes, raising his BB/9 to 4.2.

  • Nationals' Carter Kieboom: Begins rehab assignment

Kieboom (oblique) is set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with High-A Wilmington, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.

Kieboom has been on the minor-league injured list since June 20 because of an oblique strain, but he's rounding back into good health and could potentially get a look in Washington down the stretch. The 25-year-old former top prospect hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021, battling various injuries along the way, but with Jeimer Candelario traded to the Cubs, Kieboom could get a look at third base for the Nationals down the stretch if he can stay healthy.

  • Nationals' Elijah Green: Placed on minor-league IL

Green (wrist) was placed on the 7-day injured list Tuesday at Single-A Fredericksburg, Bobby Blanco of MASNSports.com reports.

Green hasn't appeared in a minor-league game since late June due to a nagging wrist injury that will now officially sideline him at least a little while longer. The 19-year-old outfielder was the fifth overall selection in the 2022 First-Year Player Draft, but he's slashed just .218/.327/.318 across 248 plate appearances when healthy this year in Low-A ball.

  • Nationals' Jake Alu: Gets look at third base

Alu is starting at third base and batting eighth Tuesday against the Brewers.

Alu will be making his first career start at third base, after his other four starts with Washington this season came in left field. The utility man was called up Monday after the Nationals traded Jeimer Candelario to the Cubs. Alu was slashing .298/.360/.428 with five home runs and 16 steals through 74 games this season at Triple-A Rochester and could get an extended look with the big club over the final two months of the 2023 campaign.

  • Nationals' Lane Thomas: In lineup for Washington

Thomas is starting in right field and batting second Tuesday versus the Brewers.

Thomas has been called a potential trade candidate for the Nationals, but it looks as though he will remain with the club through the 6 p.m. ET deadline. The 27-year-old outfielder has posted a solid .807 OPS with 16 homers and 12 steals through 105 games this season.
