Top Padres News

  • Padres' Rich Hill: Debut coming Sunday

Hill is scheduled to make his Padres debut Sunday against the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Hill was acquired from the Pirates -- along with Ji-Man Choi -- on Tuesday in exchange for Jackson Wolf, Estuar Suero and Alfonso Rivas. The veteran left-hander had posted a rather underwhelming 4.76 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and 104:47 K:BB through 119 innings (22 starts) this season with Pittsburgh, but he can still work deep in games and miss a few bats at age 43.

  • Padres' Scott Barlow: Shines in team debut

Barlow earned a hold against Colorado on Wednesday, striking out three batters in 1.2 scoreless innings.

After being acquired in a trade with the Royals on Tuesday, Barlow saw his first action as a Padre on Wednesday, coming on with San Diego holding a 4-1 lead with one out in the sixth frame. The right-handed reliever's own error put a runner on base in that inning, but that was the only misstep by Barlow in an impressive outing during which he threw 15 of 20 pitches for a strike and fanned three batters. Josh Hader is entrenched as the Padres' closer, so Barlow probably won't have many chances to add to the 13 saves he notched while with Kansas City, but he should still see plenty of high-leverage situations as a bridge to Hader.

  • Padres' Juan Soto: Adds another homer

Soto went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's 11-1 win over the Rockies.

Soto extended the Padres' lead to 3-0 in the third inning with a two-run, 449-foot blast off Kyle Freeland, his third homer in his last two games. Soto now has hits in six straight contests, going 12-for-25 (.480) with five multi-hit efforts in that span. His slash line is up to .277/.424/.527 with 23 homers, 70 RBI, 63 runs scored and six steals across 479 plate appearances this season.

  • Padres' Xander Bogaerts: Three hits, steal in win

Bogaerts went 3-for-5 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base in Wednesday's win over Colorado.

Bogaerts hasn't been hitting for much power recently (he has just one home run since July 4), though he's remained productive at the plate, going 25-for-79 (.316) over his last 20 contests. The 30-year-old shortstop would add his 12th stolen base of the year Wednesday, leaving him three shy of his career high set back in 2017. Bogaerts is now slashing .266/.344/.396 with 11 homers, 52 runs scored and 37 RBI across 442 plate appearances in his first season with the Padres.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Homers in win

Kim went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two additional runs scored in Wednesday's 11-1 victory over the Rockies.

Kim led off Wednesday's contest with a solo homer off Kyle Freeland, his 15th of the year. The 27-year-old Kim is now 4-for-8 to start August after batting .337 (30-for-89) with five home runs and a .999 OPS across 24 games in July. Kim has certainly embraced the leadoff role in San Diego -- his slash line is up to .284/.380/.838 with 60 runs scored, 41 RBI and 22 stolen bases through 406 plate appearances this season.

  • Padres' Fernando Tatis: Cranks 100th career homer

Tatis went 1-for-4 with a three-run homer in Wednesday's victory over Colorado.

Tatis broke the game open with a three-run homer off Daniel Bard in the ninth inning, extending the Padres' lead to 8-1 in the ninth inning. It's Tatis' 19th homer of the season and the 100th of his MLB career. The 24-year-old Tatis had been struggling a bit entering Thursday's contest, going 5-for-39 (.128) in his previous nine games. Overall, he's still slashing a strong .270/.328/.492 with 61 runs scored, 58 RBI and 17 stolen bases across 410 plate appearances this season.

  • Padres' Gary Sanchez: Belts two more homers

Sanchez went 3-for-5 with two homers and four RBI in Wednesday's win over Colorado.

Sanchez now has two multi-homer games in his last four contests. He took Kyle Freeland deep to extend San Diego's lead to 4-1 in the sixth inning before launching a 440-foot bomb off Daniel Bard in the ninth. Sanchez drove in two more runs with a base hit later in the frame, capping the Padres' seven-run inning. Sanchez now has seven homers, 15 RBI and a 1.045 OPS in his last 15 games. His slash line is up to .214/.289/.491 with 14 homers, 36 RBI and 26 runs scored across 194 plate appearances this season while getting the majority of starts behind the plate in San Diego.

  • Padres' Brent Honeywell: Dropped from 40-man roster

Honeywell was designated for assignment by the Padres on Wednesday.

Honeywell made the Opening Day roster out of Padres camp this spring and has managed to stay healthy, but the 28-year-old former Rays prospect had surrendered seven earned runs over his last 7.1 innings (seven appearances) dating back to June 30. He heads into DFA limbo showing an overall 4.05 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 42:20 K:BB across 46.2 innings of relief this year.

  • Padres' Tim Hill: Shut down with sprained finger

The Padres placed Hill on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a sprained left ring finger.

Hill presumably picked up the injury during his relief appearance in Tuesday, when he retired one batter while giving up one run on one hit and one walk in a win over the Rockies. The Padres called up Ray Kerr from Triple-A El Paso to give the team another left-handed option in the bullpen while Hill is on the mend.

  • Padres' Ray Kerr: Gets call to majors

The Padres recalled Kerr from Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Kerr will give the Padres another left-handed option out of the bullpen after the Padres moved southpaw reliever Tim Hill (finger) to the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. The 28-year-old Kerr has previously made eight appearances for San Diego this season, giving up five earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out seven over eight innings.

  • Padres' Brett Sullivan: Optioned to El Paso

San Diego optioned Sullivan to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday.

Sullivan did not appear in a game during his latest brief stint with the Padres and has batted just .170/.184/.298 across 49 major-league plate appearances this year. Luis Campusano and Gary Sanchez remain locked in as the catching tandem in San Diego.

  • Padres' Luis Campusano: Heads to bench Wednesday

Campusano is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies.

Campusano had started seven of the last eight games while frequently being included in the lineup alongside Gary Sanchez, with one serving as the designated hitter while the other handled catching duties. However, with the Padres bringing in Garrett Cooper and Ji-Man Choi at the trade deadline, opportunities for both Campusano and Sanchez to occupy the DH spot will likely become more scarce moving forward. The two will now have to fight for playing time behind the dish, with Sanchez getting the nod Wednesday.

  • Padres' Nick Martinez: Draws spot start Wednesday

Martinez will start Wednesday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field after Joe Musgrove was scratched due to "minor" right shoulder soreness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Martinez was part of the Padres' Opening Day rotation and has made four starts this season, but he's worked out of the bullpen exclusively since late April and made one-inning appearances Sunday and Monday. As such, Martinez won't be especially well rested ahead of the spot start, and the Padres may end up treating the series finale in Colorado as more of a bullpen day. San Diego could call up another pitcher from the minors to provide length behind Martinez, but no such transaction has been announced yet.

  • Padres' Joe Musgrove: Scratched with sore shoulder

Musgrove has been scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday against the Rockies due to "minor" right shoulder soreness, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

At least for the time being, the Padres don't view Musgrove's shoulder issue as anything too serious and believe he can avoid a trip to the injured list. Musgrove is tentatively in line to make his next turn through the rotation either next Tuesday or Wednesday in Seattle. Nick Martinez, who has been working out of the bullpen since late April, will make a spot start in Colorado in Musgrove's stead.

  • Padres' Juan Soto: Belts pair of homers

Soto went 2-for-5 with a three-run home run and a solo home run in Tuesday's win over the Rockies.

Soto turned in his fourth multi-hit performance of his last five games and collected multiple homers for the second time in his last 11 outings. Overall, Soto tied his single-game season high in RBI for 2023 with four for the night and pushed his home run total to 22 on the year. During his last five games, Soto is 10-for-20 (.500) with six RBI and three runs scored.

  • Padres' Josh Hader: Perfect for save No. 26

Hader picked up the save in Tuesday's 8-5 win over the Rockies. He struck out one over two-thirds of a clean inning.

Hader was unbothered by the elevation of Coors Field, stepping in and retiring the only two batters he faced for his 26th save of 2023. The southpaw hasn't allowed an earned run since May 31 (20 appearances), a span in which he's converted all 13 save opportunities and owns a 30:12 K:BB.

  • Padres' Pedro Avila: Impressive in spot start

Avila did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing one run on five hits and three walks over four innings against Colorado. He struck out seven.

After pitching in a bulk relief role in his first two appearances this season, Avila drew the starting nod and delivered four innings of one-run ball Tuesday. Though he surrendered five hits and issued three walks, Avila was adept at limiting the damage and finished with a career-high seven strikeouts. Though he's unlikely to make another start, his strikeout upside would make him an intriguing daily fantasy option if he were to be handed the ball once more.
