Top Jets News

  • Jets' Zack Kuntz: One catch in HOF game

Kuntz secured his only target for six yards during the Jets' 21-16 preseason loss to the Browns in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game.

The rookie seventh-round pick made a minimal offensive impact as his final line implies, but it was a quiet night overall for the Jets on that side of the ball. Kuntz will continue his uphill battle for a roster spot on a relatively deep tight-end corps in a road preseason battle against the Panthers a week from Saturday.

  • Jets' Jason Brownlee: Pair of catches in preseason loss

Brownlee brought in two of five targets for 17 yards during the Jets' 21-16 preseason loss to the Browns in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game.

The undrafted rookie, who's been turning heads since OTAs, put together a solid showing relative to his playing time and the quarterback play overall. Brownlee's catch total tied him with two other players for the team lead on the night, while his target tally encouragingly set the pace for the Jets as well. While his numbers don't exactly jump off the page, Brownlee's volume suggests he consistently gained some separation, giving him something to build on in a road preseason battle against the Panthers a week from Saturday.

  • Jets' Israel Abanikanda: Scores in pro debut

Abanikanda rushed nine times for 27 yards and a touchdown and brought in his only target for five yards during the Jets' 21-16 preseason loss to the Browns in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game.

The rookie fifth-round pick started the game and played up until just before the halfway point of the second quarter, scoring a 10-yard touchdown around left end on his final play with 9:04 remaining in the first half. Abanikanda gained just 17 yards on his other eight carries, so he wasn't exactly a study in efficiency. The rookie, who had a spectacular 1,431-yard, 20-touchdown season during his final college season at Pittsburgh a year ago, has reportedly been clearly behind incumbents Michael Carter and Zonovan Knight early in training camp and will look to achieve more carry-to-carry consistency during a road preseason matchup against the Panthers a week from Saturday.

  • Jets' Zach Wilson: Looks sharp in first action

Wilson completed three of five passes for 65 yards in the Jets' 21-16 preseason loss to the Browns in Thursday night's Hall of Fame Game.

Wilson was the first quarterback in with Aaron Rodgers getting the night off, and matters didn't get off on the right foot when he took a sack on the Jets' second play from scrimmage. However, the 2021 first-round pick rebounded on his second possession with a 57-yard completion to Malik Taylor from his own seven-yard line to help set up a Greg Zuerlein field goal. Wilson was in for one more drive, which also culminated in three points off the foot of Zuerlein, before giving way to Tim Boyle. With the Jets having an extra preseason game to work with this summer, Wilson could well start in place of an idle Rodgers again in New York's road preseason battle versus the Panthers a week from Saturday.

  • Jets' Chazz Surratt: Hurt after notching interception

Surratt (hamstring) has been ruled out for the remainder of Thursday's preseason opener against the Browns, Eric Allen of the Jets' official site reports.

Prior to being ruled out in the second half, Surratt made an impact in the first half by intercepting Kellen Mond. Surratt's making a push to secure a prominent role in a linebacker group with limited experience outside of C.J. Mosley and Quincy Williams. His next chance to suit up will come Aug. 12 against the Panthers in the Jets' next preseason game.

  • Jets' Brandin Echols: Done for preseason opener

Echols (hip) won't return to Thursday's preseason game against the Browns, Rich Cimini of ESPN reports.

Echols limped to the locker room late in the first half, per Ethan Greenberg of the Jets' official site. The cornerback is suspended for the regular-season opener, but Echols is eligible to play in preseason and will look to heal up before the Jets travel to Carolina for their next preseason game Aug. 12.

  • Jets' Hamsah Nasirildeen: Out for game

Nasirildeen (neck) will not return to Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Browns, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.

The linebacker left the game in the first quarter. A sixth-round pick in 2021, Nasirildeen spent a majority of last season on the Jets' practice squad, but he played in seven games and made four tackles. The third-year pro is competing for a depth spot in 2023.

  • Jets' Allen Lazard: Not suiting up Thursday

Lazard isn't in line to play in Thursday's Hall of Fame Game against the Browns, Al Iannazzone of Newsday reports.

In his first chance to get some game action with quarterback Aaron Rodgers with their new team, Lazard won't be on the field along with fellow wide receivers Garrett Wilson (ankle), Corey Davis and Mecole Hardman. Lazard's next chance for some exhibition action lands on Saturday, Aug. 12 in Carolina.

  • Jets' Michael Carter: Not playing Thursday

Carter isn't slated to suit up for Thursday's Hall of Fame Game versus the Browns, Zack Rosenblatt of The Athletic reports.

Breece Hall continues to reside on the active/PUP list due to the ACL tear that he suffered Week 7 of last season. Meanwhile, Carter and Zonavon Knight also won't play Thursday, leaving rookie Israel Abanikanda, Travis Dye and Damarea Crockett as the Jets' backfield options for the team's preseason opener. Carter's next chance to get exhibition action is Saturday, Aug. 12 at Carolina.

  • Jets' Aaron Rodgers: Could see snaps in preseason finale

Coach Robert Saleh noted earlier this week that if Rodgers plays during the preseason, it would be for "a quick tuneup" in the Jets' exhibition finale on Saturday, Aug. 26 versus the Giants, Randy Lange of the team's official site reports.

With the Jets playing it safe with the veteran QB, Zach Wilson is in line to draw the start in Thursday's preseason opener against the Browns and quite possibly the team's subsequent exhibition tilts. Assuming Rodgers is limited to a cameo appearance in the preseason, his first full contest with the Jets will occur in Week 1 against the Bills.
