  • Texans' Steven Nelson: Gets pay raise

Nelson has signed a new contract that increases his maximum compensation from $4.5 million to $6.5 million, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

The 30-year-old cornerback held out of non-mandatory offseason minicamps but did not miss any training camp time. Nelson played in 15 games last year and recorded 52 tackles, seven passes defended and an interception. The ninth-year pro has started 99 of 113 career games and should continue that trend for the Texans in 2023.

  • Texans' Scott Quessenberry: Torn ACL and MCL confirmed

Further testing determined Quessenberry's (knee) injury severity Thursday, Jonathan M. Alexander of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Houston's starting center was carted off during Wednesday's practice and unfortunately, the injury looks to be season ending. Quessenberry started 16 games for the Texans last season after four years with the Chargers. Expect the 2023 second-round pick, Juice Scruggs, to now start at center for Houston ahead of the coming season.

  • Texans' Scott Quessenberry: Exits practice early

Quessenberry (undisclosed) needed to be carted off the field during training camp Thursday. Brooks Kubena of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Quessenberry's injury details are unclear, so it's hard to know the potential severity of it. The 28-year-old came into camp competing with rookie Juice Scruggs, for the starting-center job, but he'll now need to recover first before he can return to working to earn that role.

  • Texans' Chase Winovich: Returns to field

Winovich (undisclosed) was activated from the active/PUP list Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Winovich has been on the PUP list since July 25, but he'll now be able to rejoin his team for practice. The 28-year-old is in his first season with the Texans after a one-year stop in Cleveland. He'll be working to earn a rotational role in Houston's front seven.

  • Texans' Dalton Schultz: Not practicing

Schultz (ribs) isn't practicing Thursday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Schultz has been out since Sunday when a rib injury forced him from practice early. Coach DeMeco Ryans didn't make any predictions for a return date but said Monday that he doesn't expect the absence to last long. With fellow tight ends Brevin Jordan (hamstring) and Teagan Quitoriano (undisclosed) also not practicing, the Texans are mostly left with blockers at the position, including veteran journeymen Eric Tomlinson and Nick Vannett.

  • Texans' Nick Vannett: Heading to Houston

Vannett is in line to sign with the Texans on Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

The veteran tight end will join his sixth team in his career and his third team since the beginning of the 2022 campaign. Vannett is coming off a season during which he played with both the Saints and Giants, recording six catches for 55 yards in nine appearances. He'll most likely serve as more of a blocking and special teams guy for Houston ahead of the coming season.

  • Texans' Brevin Jordan: Dealing with hamstring injury

Jordan's early exit from Sunday's practice was due to a hamstring injury, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Jordan and Dalton Schultz (ribs) both left practice Sunday, while Teagan Quitoriano (quadriceps) began training camp on the active/PUP list, leaving the Texans thin at tight end. Soft-tissue injuries have a tendency to linger, so Houston will likely take a cautious approach with Jordan to ensure he's healthy before the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against the Ravens.

  • Texans' Jake Bates: Signs with Houston

The Texans signed Bates on Tuesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Bates worked out for the Texans on Saturday as part of the team's local prospect day and impressed enough to earn a deal. The Arkansas product will attempt to push Ka'imi Fairbairn, who has been Houston's kicker since 2017 and connected on 94 percent of his field-goal attempts a year ago.

  • Texans' Troy Hairston: Officially lands on IR

Hairston (back) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Hairston will now miss the 2023 campaign unless he reaches an injury settlement with the Texans and can prove himself healthy. The second-year pro made the team as an undrafted free agent out of Central Michigan in 2022 and was believed to be competing with Andrew Beck for fullback duties. Instead, he'll now focus on getting healthy.

  • Texans' Troy Hairston: Dealing with back injury

Hairston suffered a herniated disk Sunday and is expected to be placed on IR, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Hairston was carted off the field after the injury happened. At the time it wasn't known what the injury was; however, an MRI revealed the extent of the injury. Although he has not been placed on IR yet, the move is expected to happen, and depending on the timing, he could end up being out for the season.

  • Texans' Dalton Keene: Signs with Houston

Keene signed with the Texans on Monday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

A third-round pick of the Patriots in the 2020 Draft, Keene never panned out in New England, catching three passes for 16 yards on five targets across six games as a rookie. He hasn't appeared in a regular-season contest since, bouncing around practice squads. Keene faces an uphill battle to make the Texans.

  • Texans' Dalton Schultz: Dealing with ribs issue

Schultz (ribs) exited Sunday's practice early, but coach DeMeco Ryans said Monday that the tight end will "be back out there soon."

Schultz was banged up after taking a shot to the side from fellow free-agent pickup Jimmie Ward in practice. It sounds like the tight end is day-to-day, and it's not a long-term concern. Schultz is expected to compete for the team lead in targets after coming over from the Cowboys in the offseason.

  • Texans' C.J. Stroud: Commanding the huddle

Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans noted Stroud's "command of the huddle" as an area of progress for the rookie quarterback, John McClain of SportsRadio 610 reports. "With college players now, a lot of it is looking to the sideline, and they see a signal or a picture, and that's their play," Ryans said. "But here, we're asking them to operate from a huddle, which is new."

Stroud continues to share first-team reps with Davis Mills, and Ryans mentioned a few areas of improvement before anointing the rookie as the No. 1. The coach referenced Stroud's footwork and progressions, which are things he's working on with coaches. Ryans made it a point to keep Stroud from being overwhelmed by giving him one thing per day to work on instead of multiple items.

  • Texans' Nathaniel Dell: Praised by coach

Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans described Dell as "quarterback-friendly" following Sunday's camp session, Deepi Sidhu of the Texans' official site reports.

Dell, the former Houston Cougar, made a nice catch in front of fans, who erupted in cheers. Ryans called out Dell's ability to get open and route-running ability. Both Dell and fellow draftee Xavier Hutchinson have impressed early in camp and are in the mix for the final roster spots at wide receiver.
