  • Broncos' Russell Wilson: Showing improved mobility

Wilson is seemingly in better shape than last season and could utilize his mobility more in 2023, Jon Heath of BroncosWire reports.

Wilson appears poised to get back to a more mobile playing style that made him such a dynamic quarterback in Seattle for the first nine years of his career. In 2022, however, the veteran posted just 55 rushes for 277 yards, accounting for his second-lowest single-season total in rushing attempts and third-lowest in rushing yards. With Wilson losing weight this offseason, head coach Sean Payton has allowed his franchise quarterback to scramble and practice off-script plays. "I'm comfortable when I see him climbing [the pocket] and taking off because one of those plays is like a 30-yard gain," Payton said. "When something breaks down and he flushes, a lot of the time good things happen. You have to practice that and get everyone on the same page when it happens," he added. It's clear the Broncos are committed to giving Wilson the freedom to move around more this season, a departure from Nathaniel Hackett's offensive scheme that seemed to restrict the 34-year-old to the pocket. A return to form for Wilson could lead to a bounce-back year for both Denver's offense and the signal caller's potential for fantasy success.

  • Broncos' Jonas Griffith: Lands on injured reserve

Griffith (knee) was placed on IR on Thursday, Ben Swanson of the Broncos' official site reports.

Griffith suffered the injury during a special-teams drill Tuesday when he stepped on another player's foot. Mike Klis of 9News reported the severity of the injury earlier Thursday, so his official move to injured reserve doesn't come as a surprise. In Griffith's absence, the team signed linebacker Austin Ajiake.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Slated to see preseason action

Coach Sean Payton noted Thursday that Williams (knee) will play some snaps during the preseason, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

The report notes that the Broncos may wait until the team's second exhibition game to get Williams in action, but either way, the mere fact that the running back has already progressed to this point is a major step in his recovery from a knee injury that ended his 2022 season in Week 4. Assuming Williams does in fact log preseason snaps as planned, he'd be on track to be available for Denver's regular-season opener, barring any setbacks. In such a scenario, should the team elect to ease the 2021 second-rounder back into the mix out of the gate, Samaje Perine is available to serve as another capable backfield option.

  • Broncos' Jonas Griffith: Out for season

Griffith suffered a torn ACL during practice Tuesday, Mike Klis of 9News reports.

Griffith left the practice field early Tuesday, but the severity of the injury was not known at the time. After further testing, it was revealed the 26-year-old suffered a season-ending torn ACL injury, which will require surgery to repair. It's naturally a blow to both the Indiana State product and the Broncos linebacker corps, considering Grifftih was expected to fill a rotational depth role after starting eight games last season. He'll now focus on his recovery and being ready for 2024.

  • Broncos' Jonas Griffith: Sits out Wednesday

Griffith (undisclosed) missed the Broncos' practice Wednesday, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.

The linebacker left the field during Tuesday's session with the help of trainers. Griffith started eight games and recorded 46 tackles and an interception in 2022. The fourth-year player is slotted into a depth role as Week 1 approaches.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Limited at practice Wednesday

Williams (knee) didn't participate in team drills during Wednesday's practice, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

James Palmer of NFL Network previously reported that Williams, who continues to recover from a knee injury that ended his 2022 season in Week 4, would be in line to rest Wednesday, so the running back's limitations were presumably a matter of load management. Per Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, the pace of Williams' recovery from ACL surgery is highly encouraging thus far, and the Broncos have optimism that the running back can be ready to go for Week 1 in the absence of any setbacks. If the Broncos elect to ease Williams back into the mix early on, however, Samaje Perine is on hand to provide the team with another capable backfield option.

  • Broncos' Riley Moss: Undergoes repair procedure

Head coach Sean Payton told reporters Wednesday that Moss (sports hernia) underwent a core muscle repair surgery Tuesday, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

The 2023 third-round pick will miss almost all of camp and each of Denver's preseason games ahead of his rookie year. Payton also told reporters that this surgery typically requires a four-week recovery time. It will be harder for Moss to crack the field as a rookie after missing this time during the preseason, but he could get a look as a rotational cornerback and contribute on special teams nonetheless.

  • Broncos' Jaleel McLaughlin: Impressing at camp

McLaughlin is standing out in practice and catching the attention of head coach Sean Payton, Chad Jensen of SI.com reports.

Despite being an undrafted rookie, McLaughlin is turning heads thus far in camp for all of the right reasons. The 5-foot-7, 187-pound running back is impressing in practice, prompting Payton to say, "He has a little burst, and there's some toughness to him." Beyond his play on the field, McLaughlin's dedication has not gone unnoticed by his coach. "He's the first one here," Payton said. "I don't know what time he gets here in the morning, but it's pretty early. He's a guy you root for." McLaughlin totaled over 3,000 yards rushing and receiving while scoring 27 total touchdowns in his last two seasons at Youngstown State. If the 22-year-old can continue to garner positive attention for his play as preseason games get underway, he'll have the chance to compete for a roster spot behind Javonte Williams and Samaje Perine.

  • Broncos' Tim Patrick: Lands on IR

The Broncos placed Patrick (Achilles) on injured reserve Wednesday, Aric DiLalla of the team's official site reports.

Patrick is set to miss a second consecutive season after he suffered a torn Achilles' tendon in Monday's practice. With Denver also waiving KJ Hamler with a non-football illness designation Monday, 2023 second-round draft pick Marvin Mims should handle an expanded role in the team's passing offense alongside top wideouts Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton.

  • Broncos' Marvin Mims: Full participant in practice

Mims was a full participant at practice Monday, Nick Kosmider of The Athletic reports.

After missing some time due to a hamstring injury, Mims' full participation in practice is welcome news as the Broncos lost veteran receiver Tim Patrick to a season-ending Achilles tear during Monday's practice. The 21-year-old rookie could have the opportunity to carve out a role in the receiving corps with Patrick out for the season and KJ Hamler (pectoral/pericarditis) waived and expected to miss at least a month. When speaking about Mims' progress, head coach Sean Payton said, "He's feeling good and you're going to see him more and more this week. He's going to be ramping up and we're encouraged." The Oklahoma product will look to secure the No. 3 spot on the depth chart behind Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton ahead of the 2023 campaign, as he presents a deep threat for Russell Wilson, who is no stranger to stretching the field.

  • Broncos' Elliott Fry: Competing for kicking job

Fry and Brett Maher are in a training-camp competition for the Broncos' kicker job, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports.

Fry signed a contract with Denver in late May after being waived by Arizona a few weeks prior. The Broncos subsequently brought in Maher, who had a strong regular season with Dallas last year before coming down with a case of the yips in the playoffs, missing four extra-point tries in a game against Tampa Bay. Given Maher's advantage in experience -- he's kicked in 54 regular-season games to Fry's three -- the former likely has the early leg up in the training-camp battle, though Maher will need to prove he's past the issues that led to his postseason struggles to win the job.

  • Broncos' Brett Maher: Favorite for kicking job

Maher and Elliott Fry are in a training camp battle to be the Broncos' kicker this season, with Maher the favorite to land the job, Chris Tomasson of The Denver Gazette reports.

Maher signed with Denver in late July following a solid regular season with Dallas last year, when he made 29 of 32 field-goal attempts, including going 9-for-11 from at least 50 yards. However, the veteran kicker famously caught a case of extra-point yips in the playoffs, which played a role in his exit from the Cowboys. Should Maher prove to be over that issue, he has a leg up in the competition with Fry, who has kicked in only three NFL games in his career.

  • Broncos' Fabian Moreau: Finds new home

Moreau signed a one-year contract with the Broncos on Tuesday, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports.

Moreau will play for his third team in three years after spending the first four seasons of his career in Washington. He spent last season with the Giants, appearing in 14 games and recording 66 tackles (50 solo) and 10 passes defended. He'll likely have a depth role in Denver's secondary.
