  • Chiefs' Charles Omenihu: Sitting out practice

Omenihu (calf) did not practice Thursday, Matt McMullen of the Chiefs' official site reports.

Omenihu's injury details are unclear, but he'll remain sidelined until he's fully healed. The 25-year-old is poised to take on a significant role in the Chiefs' defensive-line rotation, but he'll now need to focus on his recovery so that he can return to the field.

  • Chiefs' Justyn Ross: Pushes for roster spot

Ross, who has had a strong training camp, continues to push for a roster spot as the Chiefs' preseason opener approaches, Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports.

The report notes that Ross, who has moved past a foot injury that kept him on injured reserve all of last season, has seen some first-team reps during training camp and has looked good in doing so. At this point, Kadarius Toney (who has been sidelined of late with a knee issue), Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Skyy Moore and rookie Rashee Rice profile as the Chiefs' top WR options, but if Ross continues to excel as the summer progresses, the 6-foot-4, 210-pounder could secure a depth role in the team's passing offense to start the coming season.

  • Chiefs' Isiah Pacheco: On track for clearance soon

Pacheco (hand/shoulder) is on track to be cleared for contact by Aug. 20, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.

While the significance of the mentioned date is unclear, it would give Pacheco an 18-day grace period before the Chiefs open the regular season against Detroit on Sept. 7. In other words, he'll have plenty of time to ramp up and get in game shape for Week 1 if he does in fact gain clearance for contact on or before Aug. 20. In the meantime, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Jerick McKinnon have been getting most of the first-team reps at training camp, while undrafted rookie Deneric Price has become the subject of summer hype despite mostly working with the backups. Pacheco still projects as the lead runner of the group on the heels of his solid rookie season, but it could end up being a three- or four-man committee rather than the two-way Pacheco/McKinnon split from the latter portion of last season. Pacheco's shoulder is said to be his lone health concern at this point, while he's made a full recovery from offseason hand surgery.

  • Chiefs' Tershawn Wharton: Returns to practice

Wharton (knee) has been activated from the active/PUP list and is practicing with the team Wednesday, Pete Sweeney of ArrowheadPride.com reports.

Wharton suffered a torn ACL during Week 5 last season and started camp on the PUP list. However, it appears the 25-year-old is fully recovered after being able to pass a physical and is now ready to compete. He should earn a depth role on Kansas City's defensive line.
