  • Cowboys' Simi Fehoko: Returns to training camp

Fehoko returned to practice Thursday after missing time due to a quad contusion, Michael Gehlken of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Fehoko suffered the injury Monday and wasn't expected to miss too much time. The third-year pro is working to maintain his depth role in the Cowboys' receiving corps after appearing in five games last season and catching three balls on four targets for 24 yards.

  • Cowboys' KaVontae Turpin: Making an impression

Turpin is one of eight players who has impressed during training camp, Jon Machota of the Athletic reports.

Turpin impressed as the team's return man last season and continues to show off those skills in camp. More importantly, Turpin is continuing to improve as a receiver and has been consistently making plays on offense. The second-year pro should make the 53-man roster due to his previously mentioned special-teams skills, but he may be making a case for a larger role on offense as well.

  • Cowboys' Brandin Cooks: Already clicking with Prescott

Cooks has shown a strong rapport with Dak Prescott through minicamp and the early part of training camp, Jon Machota of The Athletic reports.

The veteran wideout's ability to quickly grasp an offense and form a connection with a quarterback is a big part of the reason why he's been able to post 1,000-yard seasons for all four teams he's suited up with over his nine-year NFL career, and Cooks appears well on his way to making it five-for-five in his first campaign with Dallas in 2023. With CeeDee Lamb already drawing plenty of attention from secondaries, Cooks' ability to stretch the field figures to cause a lot of problems for defenses.

  • Cowboys' Rico Dowdle: Making push for backup spot

Dowdle is in the mix to win the top backup job behind Tony Pollard in the Cowboys' backfield, Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News reports.

The 25-year-old has just seven NFL carries since being signed as an undrafted free agent out of South Carolina in 2020, as injuries have disrupted his career so far, but Dowdle is drawing high marks in training camp for his football IQ and blocking ability. His value as a special-teams player could secure him a spot on the 53-man roster regardless of how much usage he sees on offense, but with Ronald Jones (suspension) set to miss the first two games of the regular season, the door is open for Dowdle to push Malik Davis for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.

  • Cowboys' Ronald Jones: Cites health issues for suspension

Jones said Tuesday that his performance-enhancing drugs violation was due to heart medication he's been taking since he entered the league, and that the NFL rejected an appeal of his two-game suspension, Todd Archer of ESPN.com reports. "We tried to appeal. I asked for a re-test, sample my blood, my health concerns and they didn't really look at it," Jones said. "My family suffers from heart disease. I just want to clear my name in terms of I'm not cheating the game of football. It's literally a prescription medicine."

Jones will still be able to practice with the Cowboys during training camp and the preseason ahead of missing the first two weeks of the regular season, but Malik Davis is now expected to get the first crack at securing the No. 2 spot on the backfield depth chart behind Tony Pollard.

  • Cowboys' Malik Davis: No competition incoming

Davis appears set to head into Week 1 as the backup to Tony Pollard in the Cowboys backfield, David Moore of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy refuted the idea the team might bring in Ezekiel Elliott or another veteran back in the wake of Ronald Jones' two-game suspension for a performance-enhancing drugs violation. Davis made a positive impression as a rookie in 2022 in limited action, averaging 4.2 yards per carry on 38 totes, and he'll likely battle Jones for the No. 2 role behind Pollard once Jones is reinstated. Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle are the other depth options in the Dallas backfield.
