  • Giants' Eric Gray: In mix for punt return duties

Gray fielded punts in practice Thursday and is a candidate to take on that role for the Giants this season, Ryan Novozinksy of NJ Advance Media reports.

Gray wasn't a prominent return man in college -- he tallied just nine punt returns and four kickoff returns in his four-year tenure, including none of either type in his senior season -- but he's a logical candidate to see work in that regard for the Giants given his lateral quickness. Running back Gary Brightwell worked as New York's primary kickoff returner last season, while Richie James served as the team's top punt returner for much of the campaign. James is now in Kansas City, and the team may not want to turn to a starter such as cornerback Adoree' Jackson, who sprained his MCL while returning a punt in Week 11 last season and missed seven weeks. As such, Gray could take over on punts while also working in a limited role as a running back behind Saquon Barkley and Matt Breida.

  • Giants' Cole Beasley: Could be ascending up depth chart

Beasley worked as the Giants' No. 1 slot receiver during Thursday's practice, Ryan Novozinksy of NJ Advance Media reports.

Beasley's role Thursday must be taken with context, as Parris Campbell -- who has been occupying the No. 1 slot position during training camp -- was sidelined due a knee issue and Sterling Shepard and Wan'Dale Robinson are both working back from ACL tears. Still, it can only help Beasley in his quest to make the team and play a meaningful role this season that he had such a prominent opportunity to show that he still has gas left in the tank, especially since he reportedly has looked good in camp so far. The Giants have a crowded receiver room, especially in the slot, and it's too early to make any assumptions about how things will shake out, but Beasley appears to have at least a decent chance to secure a depth spot with New York in his age-34 campaign.

  • Giants' Ryder Anderson: Avoids worst-case scenario

Anderson (triceps) left practice Wednesday with an injury, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports.

The Indiana product is entering his second year after going undrafted in 2022. Anderson appeared in seven games (two starts) for the G-Men last season and totaled eight tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. The 24-year-old will miss some time, but his injury could have been significantly worse than just aggravating his triceps.

  • Giants' Adoree' Jackson: Getting slot work

Jackson has spent time during training camp working out of the slot, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Jackson has lined up in the slot, as the Giants get a look at rookie Tre Hawkins on the outside. Although it's unlikely Jackson will play there regularly once the season begins, Duggan speculates that with so many teams playing their top receiver in the slot, it makes sense to give the veteran some work there.

  • Giants' Tre Hawkins: Showing out in camp

Hawkins has been getting some first-team reps in practice, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Hawkins' first-team looks have mostly been to give teammate Adoree' Jackson a breather. However, he's held his own against the offenses first unit, as Duggan specifically notes him breaking up passes to Jalin Hyatt and Isaiah Hodgins during practice Tuesday. The Old Dominion product wasn't selected until the sixth round of the 2023 Draft, but he's making the most of his opportunities as he works to earn a role on the Giants' 53-man roster.

  • Giants' Jeff Smith: Dealing with injury

Smith is working to recover from a knee injury during training camp, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Smith's 2022 season ended due to a knee injury and it's not clear if the current ailment is related. Duggan notes that the injury is not likely significant; however, he could miss some time. The former Jet is probably on the outside looking in when it comes to making the Giants' 53-man roster, so he'll continue to work toward a speedy recovery as he attempts to make the active roster.

  • Giants' Parris Campbell: Dealing with knee tendinitis

Campbell was held out of Thursday's practice due to knee tendinitis, Charlotte Carroll of The Athletic reports.

Campbell played only 15 games over his first three seasons with the Colts before finally staying healthy last year and playing all 17 games en route to a 63-623-3 receiving line. He then signed a one-year contract with the Giants in March, and by all accounts he'd been busy at training camp prior to Thursday, with multiple beat writers reporting that Campbell and TE Darren Waller had seen the most targets from QB Daniel Jones at training camp. Campbell's injury history still lingers as a relevant factor, but the current issue doesn't sound serious and he thus appears well on his way to a top-three spot on the depth chart to start the season. The Giants have a bunch of wide receivers in the mix for roles, including rookie Jalin Hyatt and ACL recoverees Sterling Shepard and Wan'Dale Robinson, but Duggan projects the Giants will start the season with a veteran trio of Campbell, Isaiah Hodgins and Darius Slayton as the primary WR grouping in 11 personnel.

  • Giants' Shane Lemieux: Back at practice, rotates at center

Lemieux, who was placed on injured reserve in December with a toe injury, participated in training camp practice Monday, John Fennelly of USA Today reports.

Lemieux played in just one game last season due to foot and toe injuries and was eventually placed on injured reserve. Head coach Brian Daboll told reporters Monday that Lemieux is part of a center rotation that includes presumed starter John Michael Schmitz, Ben Bredeson and Jack Anderson.

  • Giants' Joshua Ezeudu: Reps with first team offense

Ezeudu participated in training camp practice Monday, Patricia Traina of SI.com reports.

Ezeudu rotated with Ben Bredeson and Tyre Phillips at left guard with the first-team offensive line. Ezeudu was placed on injured reserve in December with a neck injury, and it was later revealed that he was dealing with a shoulder issue, which he got surgery for in February. The 2022 third-round pick out of North Carolina started in two games at left guard last season and will compete to reclaim that starting role.

  • Giants' Rakeem Nunez-Roches: Returns to full practice

Nunez-Roches (concussion) worked with the the first-team defense in practice Monday, Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports.

Nunez-Roches was involved in a car accident near the Giants' practice facility last Tuesday and was subsequently placed in concussion protocol. He returned to practice in a non-contact capacity Sunday and was then cleared to practice in full Monday. Nunez-Roches is expected to play a rotational role for New York this season after joining the organization on a three-year contract in March.

  • Giants' J.C. Hassenauer: Moved to IR

Hassenauer (triceps) was placed on injured reserve Tuesday,Dan Salomone of the Giants' official site reports.

Hassenauer suffered the injury Sunday, and it was expected that he'd be out long term, so this move doesn't necessarily come as a surprise. He'll now have to focus on getting healthy and being ready for the 2024 campaign.
