  • Lions' Trinity Benson: Avoids serious injury

Head coach Dan Campbell indicated Wednesday that Benson (leg) has avoided a serious injury, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

It was possible to be pessimistic after Benson was carted off the field, but the pass catcher likely only suffered a sprain according to Kyle Meinke of MLive.com. The 26-year-old had his 2022 season cut short due to a knee injury, but came in to camp seemingly fully recovered. He is looking to earn a spot on the team's 53-man-roster, so a return sooner than later would be advantageous.

  • Lions' Jahmyr Gibbs: Part of two-headed monster

Coach Dan Campbell envisions a "two-headed monster" in the backfield with Gibbs and David Montgomery, ESPN.com's Eric Woodyard reports.

Campbell is merely confirming what was made obvious by Detroit's offseason moves. The Lions let Jamaal Williams walk and later traded D'Andre Swift, but only after signing Montgomery to a three-year, $18 million contract ($8.75 million guaranteed) and drafting Gibbs at No. 12 overall. While Montgomery is a capable pass catcher in his own right, Campbell said he views Gibbs as the guy who "carries the scalpel" and "can hurt you in the pass game." The Lions head coach also mentioned his previous experience on teams that utilized two running backs, including the Giants with Ron Dayne / Tiki Barber and the Saints with Mark Ingram / Alvin Kamara. The latter is a reasonable comparison for Montgomery/Gibbs, though presumably in an offense with less cumulative production up for grabs given that Jared Goff is no Drew Brees. Then again, Williams and Swift combined for over 2,000 scrimmage yards and 25 TDs last year, and that was with Swift missing three games and third-stringer Justin Jackson adding 281 total yards and two TDs of his own. Montgomery and Gibbs are probably a better real-life duo than Williams/Swift, with the rookie being the upside play for fantasy thanks to his combination of speed, receiving skills and draft capital.

  • Lions' Jarren Williams: Suffers injury during practice

Williams (lower body) had to be carted off the field during practice Thursday, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official site reports.

Williams will have to wait for further evaluation before knowing the severity of the injury. However, it will derail the 26-year-old's work to earn a roster spot with Detroit for the time being. Williams played two games with the Lions last season, but saw the field only on special teams.

  • Lions' Trinity Benson: Carted off field Wednesday

Benson suffered a leg injury in practice Wednesday, Kyle Meinke of MLive.com reports.

Benson needed to be carted off the field after suffering the injury. However, after evaluation, head coach Dan Campbell suggested it was just a sprain. The 26-year-old came into camp fully recovered from a knee injury that cut his 2022 campaign short, but now he'll have to deal with another setback. He'll work to get healthy as he tries to earn a spot on the team's 53-man roster.

  • Lions' Jameson Williams: In line for many preseason reps

Head coach Dan Campbell said Wednesday that Williams (suspension) will get "a ton of game reps" during the Lions' three preseason contests, Tim Twentyman of the team's official site reports.

Detroit opens its exhibition slate Aug. 11 against the Giants, a game in which Williams can expect to see significant run. Whether or not that'll be with Jared Goff and the rest of the first-team offense is unknown, but, as Campbell noted, Williams "didn't practice last year" due to his recovery from a torn ACL that sidelined the wide receiver until Week 13. Once he got on the field, Williams' snap count was managed, and he logged just two touches, but they went for a 41-yard touchdown catch and a 40-yard carry. So far in training camp, he's had little issue getting open against the Lions defense, but issues with drops continue to plague him. In any case, the team has a plan for Williams to get as much work as possible before he's required to serve a six-game gambling suspension to start the upcoming campaign.

  • Lions' Penei Sewell: Returns to practice

Sewell (concussion) participated in Lions camp Wednesday after missing the three prior practices with a head injury, Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Detroit will be happy to have their cornerstone tackle back, as he's started every game for the Lions since being drafted in 2021 and has already received Pro Bowl honors. Expect the 22-year-old to continue holding down the right side of Detroit's offensive line for years to come.

  • Lions' Emmanuel Moseley: Goes to PUP

Moseley (knee) was placed on Detroit's active/PUP list Wednesday, Kyle Meinke of Michigan Live reports.

Moseley has had a long summer of recovery after tearing his ACL during Week 5 of last season. The veteran cornerback signed a two-year, $9.4 million contract with the Lions this offseason, coming over from San Francisco. Over the past two years, Moseley has started every game he has appeared in for the 49ers (16) and recorded 64 tackles, 16 pass breakups and two interceptions. Ahead of the coming season, expect the 27-year-old to slide into a starting spot in Detroit's secondary after he's recovered.

Vaitai (back) was spotted working with the starting offensive line at Lions camp Sunday, Tim Twentyman of the team's official site reports.

Vaitai has been dealing with a back injury that held him out of the 2022 season but has since had time to move past the issue. The veteran guard also still seems to hold a starting spot on the offensive line after Evan Brown, who filled in for him last season, signed with Seattle this offseason.

Eze (undisclosed) has consistently been taking backup reps at tackle throughout Lions camp, Jeff Risdon of USA Today reports.

Awosika (ankle) is taking part in team drills during training camp, Jeff Risdon of LionsWire reports.
