  • Falcons' Mathew Sexton: Inks deal with Falcons

Sexton has signed a contract with the Falcons, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Sexton worked out with Atlanta on Monday and apparently showed enough to get an opportunity with the team. He is coming off a stint in the XFL with the Vegas Vipers where he accumulated 364 yards on 23 receptions across 10 games. The 26-year-old will now compete for a depth wide receiver role in Atlanta in what is already a crowded room.

  • Falcons' Desmond Ridder: Has Blank's confidence

Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Tuesday that he feels "pretty strongly" that Ridder is "going to be our quarterback of the future," Josh Kendall of The Athletic reports.

Head coach Arthur Smith named Ridder as the team's starting quarterback in late March, two weeks after the team signed Taylor Heinicke to a two-year, $14 million contract. The second-year pro seems to be making a good impression in training camp, but there's still a lot that can go wrong with a relatively unproven young quarterback who has one of the better backups in the league behind him. Even if his standing atop the depth chart is truly secure this summer, Ridder won't be long for the starting job come September if he doesn't play well. Ridden has several things working in his favor, including ample collegiate experience as a starter, an Atlanta offensive line that improved greatly last season and a supporting cast of skill-position players that includes top-10 picks from each of the last three NFL Drafts (tight end Kyle Pitts, wideout Drake London and running back Bijan Robinson). It doesn't hurt to have the support of the team owner either, though Blank is 80 years old and seemingly not quite as involved with the team's day-to-day operations as he once was.

  • Falcons' Jonnu Smith: Should rejoin practice soon

Smith has been held out of practice this week with a minor injury but should return soon, Michael Rothstein of ESPN.com reports.

Falcons coach Arthur Smith said Wednesday that "at worst" the tight end would return for joint practices with Miami ahead of the two teams' Aug. 11 preseason opener. The Falcons haven't revealed how they plan on deploying Smith in an offense that also has tight end Kyle Pitts, but Atlanta presumably have a significant role in mind for Smith after acquiring the soon-to-be 28-year-old in a trade with New England this offseason. Granted, a significant real-life role is unlikely to equate to fantasy value, unless maybe Pitts misses a chunk of the season again.

  • Falcons' Kyle Pitts: Running routes at camp

Pitts (knee) ran routes against defenders Monday for the first time this summer, D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

The Falcons are easing Pitts into training camp after last year's MCL injury, with coach Arthur Smith noting Monday that the tight end is on track with his "return to play" plan. Smith also suggested Pitts could take snaps this preseason, though it'll nonetheless be surprising if the 2021 first-round pick makes more than a token appearance in exhibition games. Concern regarding Pitts' fantasy prospects for 2023 has more to do with his lack of production last year before getting hurt than any doubt about his Week 1 status; at this point it seems he's healthy and the Falcons are just being cautious.

  • Falcons' Godwin Igwebuike: Finds new home

Igwebuike signed a contract with the Falcons on Sunday, Adam Schefter of ESPNreports.

Igwebuike appeared in five games with the Seahawks last season and gained four yards on three carries, but he is more notably known for his work on special teams. He generated 308 yards on 11 kickoff returns and 697 yards on 28 punt returns with the Lions in 2021. He'll likely be competing for a similar role with Atlanta during training camp and preseason.
