Panthers' DJ Chark: Building chemistry with rookie QB
Chark and QB Bryce Young have developed timing quickly, especially on deep passes, Joseph Person of The Athletic reports.
The Panthers signed Chark and Adam Thielen this offseason to give Young a pair of experienced starters at wide receiver, where 2021 second-round pick Terrace Marshall and rookie second-rounder Jonathan Mingo also are competing for playing time. Chark is the tallest of that group at 6-3, and he might also be the fastest even if he's lost a half step since running a 4.34 40-yard dash at the 2018 Combine. Consistency is another matter, as he's missed 22 games since his 1,000-yard breakout in 2019 and has averaged a modest 3.2 catches for 48.6 yards in the 28 games he's played. Chark did improve his per-target efficiency after moving from Jacksonville to Detroit last offseason, producing 9.7 YPT in 11 games for the Lions despite playing through an ankle injury most of the year. He had surgery on the ankle in the offseason and now seems to be back at full strength without any setbacks through the first week-plus of training camp.

Panthers' Terrace Marshall: Excelling in practices
Marshall has "really surged over the last four practices" and was one of Carolina's standouts at the team's in-stadium practice Wednesday night, Mike Kaye of The Charlotte Observer reports.
The 2021 second-round pick previously earned praise from coaches and beat writers during the offseason program and seems to have continued the momentum into training camp. Despite catching only 45 passes for 628 yards and one TD through 27 career games, Marshall comes with some third-year-breakout potential in an offense that has a new playcaller (head coach Frank Reich) and a new quarterback (first overall pick Bryce Young). It helps that Marshall is one of the youngest players from his draft class, having turned 23 in June, though he'll still have to battle for snaps after the Panthers signed Adam Thielen and DJ Chark in March and drafted Jonathan Mingo in April. Chark's presence, in particular, could be a significant obstacle for Marshall, considering both are tall, fast receivers who primarily run routes downfield from outside alignments.

Henderson is set to participate at FanFest, which the Panthers are hosting Wednesday at Bank of America Stadium. Thus, it looks like his absence at Tuesday's practice was just an exercise of caution.

Panthers' Marquis Haynes: Nursing back injury
Haynes is currently sidelined with a back injury, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
Haynes' back injury means he will not be able to participate at FanFest, which Carolina is hosting Wednesday evening at Bank of America Stadium. Expect the team to err on the side of caution with their starting strongside linebacker in the immediate future in order to ensure a healthy start to the season.

Panthers' John Penisini: Reverts to reserve/PUP list
Penisini (undisclosed) has cleared waivers and reverted to the Panthers' reserve/PUP list, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.
If Penisini remains on the reserve/PUP list through training camp, he will be forced to miss the first four games of the season before being eligible to return. However, a quick return will be advantageous for his future with the team, as he is currently competing with several players for a role providing depth at nose tackle in the upcoming season.

Panthers' Taylor Stallworth: Practicing with team
Stallworth (hamstring) participated in Monday's practice.
The defensive end signed with the Panthers on June 29 after suffering a hamstring injury during the Texans' minicamp in May. Stallworth has played in 57 games and started two in five NFL seasons with four teams. He should get a chance to compete for a roster spot as training camp progresses.

Panthers' CJ Henderson: Misses camp practice
Henderson (groin) was absent from Panthers camp Tuesday, Joe Person of The Athletic reports.
The 2020 first-round pick has missed time after tweaking his groin Monday. Henderson was traded to Carolina from Jacksonville in 2021 for a fifth-round pick and the Panthers were not willing to pick up his fifth-year option this offseason. Though the Florida product has had a rocky start to his NFL career, he's still slated to start at corner ahead of the coming season.

Panthers' Vonn Bell: Back in action
Bell (hamstring) has been participating in training camp.
Bell suffered a hamstring injury during minicamp, but the 28-year-old appears to be fully recovered now. This is his first season in Carolina after spending the previous three with the Bengals. As long as he remains healthy, Bell is expected to start at strong safety.
