Top Saints News

  • Saints' Khalen Saunders: Practices fully

Saunders (illness) was a full participant in Wednesday's practice, John Hendrix of the Saints News Network reports.

The defensive tackle had been absent from training camp since exiting a practice last Thursday with an illness. Saunders landed a three-year, $14.5 million contract in the offseason after making 48 tackles in a backup role for the Super Bowl-champion Chiefs last year. The fifth-year pro is expected to start for New Orleans, assuming he stays healthy.

  • Saints' Scott Lashley: Reverts to IR

Lashley (undisclosed) has cleared waivers and reverted to the Saints' injured reserve, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports.

Lashley was waived/injured by New Orleans on Tuesday and ultimately went unclaimed. He will now be forced to spend the remainder of the 2023 season sidelined unless both he and the team can eventually come to terms on an injury settlement once his health allows it.

  • Saints' Andrew Dowell: Hits IR

Dowell (knee) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Luke Johnson of The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports.

Contrary to the report early Wednesday saying his knee injury wasn't expected to be serious, Dowell has been placed on IR. He will now miss the entire year unless he reaches an injury settlement with New Orleans and is waived.

  • Saints' Kendre Miller: Getting comfortable catching passes

Miller said Wednesday that his receiving skills were underutilized in college, John DeShazier of the Saints' official website reports. "It's something I've kind of had, but in college I couldn't show it a whole lot," he said. "But in the offseason, when I got cleared I was working on a lot of that stuff."

Miller also mentioned taking route-running advice from Alvin Kamara, who missed Wednesday's practice to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The likelihood of a Kamara suspension increases the chances that Miller will get snaps early in the season, even after the rookie was held out of spring practices due to the MCL injury suffered in the College Football Playoff semifinal. The Saints thought enough of Miller to invest a third-round pick, knowing about the knee injury and knowing they already had Kamara and Jamaal Williams under contract. Miller had only 29 receptions in three seasons at TCU, but he seemingly thinks it won't be long before his passing-down skills are up to NFL standards. He's avoided setbacks with the knee during training camp and should get some run this preseason.

  • Saints' Andrew Dowell: Suffers injury in camp

Dowell (knee) left Saints camp Wednesday with a knee injury, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports.

The injury is said to not be serious, but nonetheless, the Michigan State product will most likely miss some time. Last year, the 26-year-old appeared in all 17 games for New Orleans, mainly as a special teamer. Expect Dowell to continue playing on special teams and compete for a backup linebacker spot ahead of the coming season.

  • Saints' Calvin Throckmorton: Leaves practice with injury

Throckmorton (elbow) left Saints camp early Wednesday with an apparent elbow injury, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports.

Throckmorton has started 20 games (six last season) for the Saints in his first two years in the NFL after going undrafted in 2021. Once he's at full health, expect the third-year guard out of Oregon to back up Andrus Peat ahead of the coming season.

  • Saints' Alontae Taylor: Leaves practice

Taylor (hamstring) left camp after suffering a hamstring injury Wednesday, Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com reports.

The Saints' second-year cornerback will miss some time after coming up with a hamstring injury during camp, but the injury isn't too serious according to head coach Dennis Allen. Last season, Taylor had a great rookie campaign for New Orleans, tallying 11 pass breakups and 46 tackles in his nine starts. Expect him to immediately slot back into the starting defense once he's healthy.

  • Saints' Derek Carr: Surrounded by talent

Saints wide receiver Michael Thomas said Tuesday that his relationship with Carr is progressing tremendously, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.

The 30-year-old wideout is healthy and practicing after ankle and foot injuries limited him to 10 games over the past three seasons. Between Thomas and second-year standouts Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed, Carr will have a talented and diverse group of wide receivers for his first season in New Orleans. The tight-end group is somewhat less impressive, though certainly deep, and the offensive line should get back on track after an injury-riddled and uncharacteristically mediocre 2022 season, with the projected starting five for this season consisting of four first-round picks and a second-rounder. It's a nice setup for Carr's first season outside the Raiders organization, creating potential for a rebound after his own performance left much to be desired in 2022.

  • Saints' Alvin Kamara: Meeting with Goodell

Kamara is flying to New York on Wednesday to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.

Kamara anticipates being punished by the league for his role in a February 2022 incident in Las Vegas, even after he saw felony battery charges dropped in July when he pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of breach of peace. The running back is eager to tell Goodell his side of the story before the NFL determines the size of his fine and/or length of his suspension. Back at Saints training camp, any missed practices for Kamara will leave more first-team reps for Jamaal Williams, and possibly some for rookie Kendre Miller as well. The NFL could announce a suspension for Kamara at some point in the coming weeks and months.

  • Saints' Michael Thomas: Slowly working back into form

According to John DeShazier of the Saints' official site, Thomas, who was cleared to practice in full during training camp, said Tuesday that he feels like he's "trending in the right direction," and, "taking every day one day at a time..." as he works continues to work his way back from nearly a two-season long hiatus.

Thomas played just 10 games over the last three regular seasons for the Saints, as numerous injuries and subsequent surgeries plagued him during this span. DeShazier adds that the 30-year-old wideout has looked impressive during team drills and one-on-one sessions in training camp; however, it makes sense that Thomas doesn't talk like he's completely regained the same physical form from his 2018 and 2019 All-Pro campaigns. The Saints also appear to be prioritizing Thomas' long-term availability during training camp. Coach Dennis Allen said Tuesday, "There's a number of guys that we have some planned limited practice days, some planned extra days off. We've got a plan for [Thomas]." It's unclear if this precautionary practice schedule will impact Thomas' development and familiarity with new starting quarterback Derek Carr, though avoiding potential re-injury or setbacks will likely go a long way toward maximizing the wideout's effectiveness, and fantasy value, this coming season.

  • Saints' Smoke Monday: Participating in practice

Monday, who was recovering from a torn ACL he suffered last August, participated in training camp practices Thursday, Todd Graffagnini of the team's official site reports.

Monday finished the team portion of practice Thursday with a strip sack of quarterback Jake Haener. Monday signed with the Saints last August as an undrafted free agent. Now fully healthy, he'll compete for a depth spot at free safety behind Marcus Maye and Johnathan Abram.

  • Saints' Jake Haener: Doing well during practice

Haener is doing well during camp and had another good showing Tuesday, Sean Fazende of FOX 8 New Orleans reports.

Haener has been hitting his targets during practice. Fazende specifically mentions him hitting Jesse James on a deep corner route and making another strong throw to Keith Kirkwood over the middle of the field. Selected in the fourth round of the 2023 Draft, Haener is expected to fall behind Derek Carr and Jameis Winston on the team's positional depth chart, but with Winston on the last year of his contract, it's possible Haener could ultimately be vying for the backup role to Carr.
