  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Slated to see preseason action

Coach Sean Payton noted Thursday that Williams (knee) will play some snaps during the preseason, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

The report notes that the Broncos may wait until the team's second exhibition game to get Williams in action, but either way, the mere fact that the running back has already progressed to this point is a major step in his recovery from a knee injury that ended his 2022 season in Week 4. Assuming Williams does in fact log preseason snaps as planned, he'd be on track to be available for Denver's regular-season opener, barring any setbacks. In such a scenario, should the team elect to ease the 2021 second-rounder back into the mix out of the gate, Samaje Perine is available to serve as another capable backfield option.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Limited at practice Wednesday

Williams (knee) didn't participate in team drills during Wednesday's practice, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

James Palmer of NFL Network previously reported that Williams, who continues to recover from a knee injury that ended his 2022 season in Week 4, would be in line to rest Wednesday, so the running back's limitations were presumably a matter of load management. Per Dan Graziano and Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, the pace of Williams' recovery from ACL surgery is highly encouraging thus far, and the Broncos have optimism that the running back can be ready to go for Week 1 in the absence of any setbacks. If the Broncos elect to ease Williams back into the mix early on, however, Samaje Perine is on hand to provide the team with another capable backfield option.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Can participate Monday

Williams (knee) remains ahead of schedule and can participate Monday when the Broncos put on pads for the first time this summer, Zac Stevens of TheDNVR.com reports

Doctors reportedly told Williams his recovery from ACL, LCL and PCL tears could take a year to 18 months, but he avoided the PUP list for the start of training camp last week, less than 10 months after suffering the injury. Although he's been cleared for contact, the running back may still have some limitations in the coming weeks as the Broncos assess his readiness for the regular season. Williams suggested to reporters last week that it will be up to the team's coaching staff whether he plays in the preseason.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Cleared for contact

Williams (knee) indicated Thursday that he's been cleared for contact, Aric DiLalla of the Broncos' official site reports.

Given that Williams suffered a season-ending knee injury (including a torn ACL) in Week 4 last year, we'd expect the Broncos to proceed cautiously with the young running back this summer, but the pace of the 2021 second-rounder's recovery is nonetheless very encouraging. For his part, Williams suggested Thursday that whether he plays in the upcoming preseason will be up to the team's coaching staff.

  • Broncos' Javonte Williams: Practices on first day of camp

Williams (knee) participated in the first day of Denver's training camp Wednesday, but the team plans to bring him along slowly with a mix of limited practices and days off, James Palmer of NFL Network reports.

The Broncos have little reason to rush Williams' recovery with six weeks left before the start of the season, but the team is encouraged with his progress as the running back works his way back from a torn ACL suffered Oct. 2 of last year. Williams' ability to practice in any capacity at this point is a positive sign, and he projects to return to the top of the depth chart once deemed 100 percent healthy.
