  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Still making progress

Leonard (back) is continuing to ramp up his activity during training camp, although he still isn't participating in 11-on-11 team drills, James Boyd of the Atheltic reports.

Leonard continues to be brought along slowly after recovering from back surgery last year. Although he's cleared to compete, the Colts are taking a gradual route in adding to his workload during camp. He's moved beyond just individual workouts and is competing in seven-on-seven drills, but he's still being limited beyond that.

  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Practices on first day of camp

Leonard (back) participated in individual, 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills Wednesday as the Colts began training camp, JJ Stankevitz of the team's official site reports.

Leonard was limited to individual drills during OTAs, but he has been cleared for team practices, though his recovery from back surgery is still ongoing. The linebacker believes he previously rushed his return, which caused further complications, so Leonard's reps will likely remain capped throughout training camp and preseason with an eye on being available for the regular season come September.

  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Passes physical, not yet practicing

Colts general manager Chris Ballard said Tuesday that Leonard (back) passed his physical, but the linebacker remains without a timeline to gain clearance for full practices, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Leonard missed all of the 2021 campaign and only appeared in three games in 2022 before undergoing season-ending surgery on his back in November and then having a follow-up surgery in April. Indianapolis plans to be careful with the superstar linebacker and ease him back into practice slowly. The South Carolina State product collected All-Pro honors in each of his first four seasons in the NFL, but Leonard will need to prove he's fully recovered before he should be considered a cornerstone of the Colts defense again.

  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Remains unavailable for practice

Leonard (back) has yet to return to practice, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.

Leonard is still recovering from his second back surgery, which he underwent in November. The linebacker appeared in just three games in 2022, recording 11 tackles, one pass deflection and an interception while he dealt with a concussion, a broken nose and a back injury. The Colts will likely continue to be cautious in their approach with Leonard ahead of the 2023 campaign in hopes to have their defensive leader available for Week 1 versus the Jaguars.

  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Still making progress

Leonard continues to progress in his recovery from his second back surgery in November, Nate Atkins of the Indianapolis Star reports.

Leonard is "progressing well," according to head coach Shane Steichen, but he's still hesitant to put a timetable on the linebacker's return. The 27-year-old missed all but three games last season and was officially shut down in November when he underwent a second back procedure. At the end of last season, in reference to the games he did suit up for he said, "I shouldn't have been out there, shouldn't have been playing, should have just rested." However, with multiple months until training camp, Leonard is expected to be ready for it and barring any setbacks should be ready for Week 1.

  • Colts' Shaquille Leonard: Feeling good after second surgery

Leonard said that he's feeling like his normal self again following the second back surgery that he received in November, per Kevin Bowen of 107.5 The Fan Indianapolis.

Leonard missed 14 games in 2022 due to a combination of his nagging back issue, a concussion and a fractured nose, but it now sounds like the four-time All-Pro is finally back to normal. The 27-year-old originally underwent a procedure last offseason to repair two discs in his back, and it ultimately didn't address the primary cause for concern. Leonard then opted to receive a second surgery in November, which appears to have done the trick, so as of now, it seems like the 230-pound linebacker has a solid chance at suiting up for the Colts' season opener later this year.
