  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Continues to miss practice

Montgomery (leg) remained sidelined during Wednesday's practice, Dakota Randall of NESN.com reports.

Montgomery hasn't practiced since suffering a leg injury last week, but the versatile running back has been spotted on the team's rehab field, an indication that he's progressing toward a return. With Montgomery banged up and with the Patriots managing Rhamondre Stevenson's workload in training camp, Kevin Harris, Pierre Strong and J.J. Taylor have handled added practice reps.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Still sidelined Sunday

Montgomery (leg) didn't participate in Sunday's practice, Chris Mason of The Springfield Republican reports.

Montgomery suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice and hasn't practiced since. Head coach Bill Belichick called the versatile running back "day-to-day," but it's unclear when he'll be back to full speed. When healthy, Montgomery will try to establish himself in a backfield that features Rhamondre Stevenson and second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Deemed day-to-day

Montgomery, who suffered an apparent left leg injury during Thursday's practice, was not present for Friday's session, Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald reports.

The report notes that after sustaining the injury, Montgomery -- who coach Bill Belichick calls "day-to-day" -- stayed on the field for a half-speed walk-through before exiting Thursday's practice. Once he returns to the field, the versatile Montgomery will look to establish a change-of-pace/pass-catching role in a New England backfield that will be led by Rhamondre Stevenson and also includes second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Competing for role behind Stevenson

Montgomery is a candidate to serve as a complementary option behind lead back Rhamondre Stevenson during the upcoming season, Evan Lazar of the Patriots' official site reports.

The 30-year-old missed the final 16 games of the 2022 season, but now that he's moved past his injury woes, Montgomery has caught the eye of head coach Bill Belichick during the Patriots' offseason program. With Damien Harris having moved on to Buffalo this offseason, Montgomery will be competing with second-year players Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris for reps behind Stevenson. It's still possible that the Patriots will add another veteran back to the mix, but if Montgomery ends up emerging as the New England's top option on third downs, he could end up on the PPR radar.

  • Patriots' Ty Montgomery: Could be in third-down mix

Patriots running backs coach Ivan Fears indicated that Montgomery, who was limited to one game last season due to a shoulder injury, has moved past the issue, ESPN's Mike Reiss reports.

Prior to suffering his injury in the team's 2022 season opener, Montgomery appeared poised to handle a third-down role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris (who's now with the Bills). Now that he's healthy again, Montgomery will have a chance to compete for a change-of-pace role behind Stevenson, while James Robinson, Pierre Strong, Kevin Harris and J.J. Taylor also are in the mix to handle complementary backfield touches. If the versatile Montgomery emerges as a key third-down option, a role Fears believes that the 30-year-old has a chance to claim, the 6-foot, 216-pounder could merit fantasy attention in deeper PPR formats this coming season.
